Who wants to dive July 4?

Hi Divers,

Have you ever heard me talk of Rockport, Mi.? Some of us will arrive there Saturday morning and dive then and Sunday.
If you check Google maps you will find it 15 miles north of Alpena. Check the Earth image and you will see the old docks and how that area can be very sheltered. While it is now a DNR boat launch which is hardly used anymore, it was a quarry where dolomite and other materials were loaded on ships way back to the 1800’s.
Those of you that have been to Middle Island and some of our Tec charters have started from here in the past. I tried to get the Park Service to let us camp there, but it hasn’t been designated for camping yet; it is on the books.
We have had a ball diving there in the past as it has clean toilets, it is very sheltered water with good vision, 12′-40′ of depth, tons of fish in some area’s (Big pike and bass), aaaaannnndd….
out in the bay where the ships would anchor and around the old docks there are tons of ‘artifacts’ on the bottom. I have seen anchors, timbers, old equipment, ancient bottles, etc.
I have reserved 6 rooms from $56-$75 for Saturday night in Alpena at motels we have used in the past as things were practically sold out everywhere. This will be first come on the rooms, there may be more and/or camping nearby. I plan on grilling at least lunch there.
This is a great spot for Open Water or AOW dives, or just plain fun dives at no cost (oops, state park vehicle permit). It is even perfect for fishing and kayaking. You could even bring your boat and use the launch.
Call me fast. These rooms won’t last.

Thanks,
Mike
