Description

American Dive Zone, St Eustatius / The Gin House January 27 – February 3, 2024

St. Eustatius (Statia) is a tiny Dutch island in the Caribbean dominated by the Quill, a dormant volcano. Quill National Park has hiking trails along the ocean and around the volcano, which features a rainforest and many species of orchid. At least once we hike to the top. Offshore, St. Eustatius National Marine Park’s dive sites range from coral reefs to shipwrecks and are in great shape as the Marine park has had a motto of conservancy for many years.

In days gone by, the little island of St. Eustatius was the busiest port in the Caribbean, a kind of Pirates of the Caribbean scene with as many as 200 to 300 sailing vessels anchored in the harbor on any given day.

Small blue ceramic beads that were used as currency can be found on certain dive spots and beaches and can be kept as a souvenir. There are great Caribbean reefs with lots of macro life, a group of small sunken boats where turtles sleep at night and the Charles Brown, a 330’ cable laying ship at 80’ just offshore.

Nowadays it is a quiet spot 2 islands south of St Martin, our main airport destination. From St. Martin to Statia has traditionally been an 8-passenger airplane ($300) but they have now added a 100+ person ferry ($100) with a 3-hour ride as an alternative.

We have Garden view rooms at the Old Gin House and will dive with Scubaqua for 5 days of 2-tank boat dives along with 1 afternoon and 1-night dive. More boat and shore dives are available. Breakfast is included and the hotel restaurant has always been excellent as are several others nearby.
